Tourist Attractions In Canterbury
Canterbury is an ancient settlement in Kent positioned along the River Stour’s banks. This immensely picturesque city is the ecclesiastical capital of the country and it has been for an extremely long time. Because of this fact the city has a number of incredibly important religious structures, the finest of which is Canterbury Cathedral.
Canterbury Cathedral is most well-known for being the murder site of Becket but the building was founded in 597 A.D. and has an eventful and long past. Following Thomas a Becket’s death many miracles were said to have taken place and a shrine was constructed which soon became a place of pilgrimage. Sadly you cannot visit the shrine because King Henry VIII had it destroyed but the cathedral is still a place of pilgrimage for many.
The town’s most visited museum is The Canterbury Tales. The museum shows, through medieval tableaux, the pilgrimages made during the times of Chaucer. Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the immensely popular Canterbury Tales which tells the story of five pilgrimages. The story springs to life through the clever use of audiovisual aids over forty five minutes.
The Canterbury Heritage Museum of the City (now called the Museum of Canterbury) is another well attended museum. Situated within the Poor Priest’s Hospital this excellent museum depicts the history of the town. With the use of modern technology such as computers, which also includes holograms, this museum depicts eras ranging from the Vikings to the Blitz.
The Roman Museum is a strange museum in that it is underground. Using real excavation sites the museum takes us back to the Roman era using interactive computers. This is a chance to see up close patterned mosaics in a Roman house.
Of course the town features numerous other tourist attractions, far too many to describe here. The nighlife would take another article. In the above article I only introduce a handful however I hope that this has created a fascination with the town and maybe you would think about having a vacation there soon.
